30 Day Vibrant Health Diet Road-test…Days 16 To 22

In the third week I can report that I have lost 3 1/2 kilos in total (7.7 pounds) plus my normally flaky scalp is much improved. I have to admit I knew that sugar made it worse, but I had ignored that for years. My knees feel much better. I realise they won’t be perfect as they have been surgically rearranged!

When change occurs over time it can be hard to notice the gradual improvement, but I feel on my most busy days when I am active all day then go to martial arts training, then drive for nearly 2 hours back to Brisbane, that my energy is good.

One concern was that using fat as a primary fuel source that I wouldn’t have the benefit of the sugar hit when I was doing my martial arts. But it’s just fine and at 59 I can train as well as any of the younger people.

This diet can seem like you are eating a lot of food, but once I settled into it I found the higher fat content meant I didn’t need the same volume of food. I may have been consuming the same or more calories but I was burning them and not laying them down as fat.

A fixed quantity of fat has roughly twice the calories of carbohydrates, but behave very differently in your body. The fat doesn’t cause a rush of insulin to push the carb calories into fat cells leaving you low in energy in your blood stream causing hunger.

Some of the fat calories enters the fat cells but most remains as a fuel source and leaving you feeling not hungry until the fuel is burnt and it is time for another meal.

The idea is to eat until you have had enough and to eat when you are hungry, and this is so much easier to do when burning fat instead of sugar.

At the start of this week my father passed away, so it was a stressful and busy week, with more travel and changes in diet. I did my best to stick to the basic meat and vegetables. The reality is that there will always be times and places where you will be challenged but it isn’t too hard to keep mostly on track.

This diet just feels like an easy sustainable way of living.
