Five ways To Stop The After Lunch Slump Costing Your Business?

Hi Tired Business Owner

It’s two or three o’clock your digestion and that of your staff is busy digesting lunch, and soon fatigue or lack of concentration sets in.

Most people will have a carbohydrate rich lunch, pasta, sandwiches, wraps, sushi, burgers, fries etc and all of these foods have something in common which can affect your business.

All these carb rich foods will covert quickly to glucose in your blood stream causing a release of insulin to control the excess sugar. The insulin pulls the glucose from your blood stream and into your fat cells where they are converted to fats, and in most cases this fat will stay with you.

The lower blood sugar means you have little fuel in your blood to give your body and brain the energy you need to work through the afternoon.

This causes fatigue, a lack of focus, concentration and reduced your ability to make important decisions. Some people will have a reduced ability to manage their stress, and some will be quick to get angry.

There is in addition a natural dip in your temperature and adrenal hormone output in the afternoon. This is the ideal time for a power nap but that isn’t possible for most businesses.

There are five key solutions to ensuring productivity is maintained.

  1. Ensure you get enough sleep. And chances are it’s more than you think. The current research is dispelling the notion of surviving on a few hours a night. Even if you think you can manage it you will pay a hefty price in time. Often via heart disease.
  2. Ensure that the important decisions are made in the morning as well as working out the more complicated aspects of your business, because thyroid hormone is stronger in the morning causing your brain to be clearer.
  3. Dump the carb rich lunch and embrace a low carb higher fat model of eating. Using fat as fuel your energy is more constant as you will secrete little insulin leaving you with an available energy source .Clients who work in the IT area tell me they think much better and can work for longer periods.
  4. Set clear times to work in a focused manner then take a break for a few minutes. 25 minutes on and 5 minutes off works the best for your internal rhythms. It is important during the 5 minutes off to get out of your chair, to move around, stretch a little and drink some water.
  5. Avoid excess coffee, the caffeine gives a little but it takes a lot from your adrenals and your brain.
